Certainly the heart has always something to tell about the future to those who listen to it. But what does the heart know? Scarce a little of what has already happened.

Renzo and Lucia are young lovers who long to marry, however Don Rodrigo, who desires Lucia plots that the wedding be cancelled and A series of events ensures the two are are separated.

The Betrothed is an epic historical adventure telling the story of their departure and respective journeys to reunite. The two encounter both help and hindrance by many weird and wonderful characters and flee many dangers such as famine, plaque and war along their way.

The novel has many rich characters and a exquisite descriptive narrative by Manzoni, featured many phrases which have passed into the colloquial. An epic romantic adventure which speaks to hope, passion and faith during turbulent times in seventeenth century Italy.
