Certainly the heart has always something to tell about the future to those who listen to it. But what does the heart know? Scarce a little of what has already happened.
Renzo and Lucia are young lovers who long to marry. Don Rodrigo, however, who desires Lucia, plots that the wedding be cancelled as a series of events ensure the two are separated.
The Betrothed is an epic historical adventure telling the story of their departure, and respective journeys to reunite. The two encounter both help and hindrance by many weird and wonderful characters and flee many dangers such as famine, plaque, and war along their way.
The novel has many rich characters and a exquisite descriptive narrative by Manzoni, including many phrases which have passed into the colloquial. An epic romantic adventure which speaks to hope, passion, and faith during turbulent times in seventeenth century Italy.
